Grinding gears 140-160 1972

On my 72 164, with M 410 transmission, when I put the car in gear right after start up the gears grind. It does this whether I am engaging first or reverse. After a few blocks driving, the grinding starts to dissipate and then after a bit more driving, disappears entirely. I replaced gear box oil about a year ago with Red Line MTL which helped a little. Prior to that it had SAE 30 oil for a year or two and prior to that?????? Clutch is old. In fact my guess is its the original since the car has about 120K miles. What should I suspect and should I do anything about it now or wait until a new clutch is needed. Thanks for all input.

It sounds to me like the clutch friction disc is hanging up on the input shaft, and that causes a bit of drag which keeps the trans turning even with the clutch pedal down. When you use it a bit, it frees up. Best solution is to yank the trans and clean and lubricate the splines on both the trans input shaft, and the disc hub.

Just get in the habit of putting it into second then, then first or reverse. (keep the clutch depressed... just push the clutch, put it into second, then where you want it to be) Common thing, and its easier to change your habits than it is to rebuild the transmission...

Yeah I know of that wee trick. The tranny I have is even worse. I have to engage 3rd, then 2nd, then 1st...

        LOL!

Sorry! -Just gave me a good laugh! -when I saw the picture for me! But, hey I know! Funny though, none of my 120's or other classics has that problem, but my daily '76 245 van from time to time has to be tricked that way too!

But isn't this a bit like leaning forward on hi-way when trying to read a road-sign? (10 inches closer at 60 mph! REALLY helps!)

        :-)

Your car must have the 5-sp M47 right? That's also the tranny I use in my amazon! They are famous for bad synchro's on 1st and 2nd gear. LOL!

          cheers, ben
