No turn signal, but running light acting like one. 200 1985

I bought a 1985 Volvo 244 W/98,000 miles about 5 months ago. It's a great car,one owner, all records included, well maintained. Here is the problem. The left front Turn signal is not blinking. Instead the running light on the same side is. I've tried changing the bulb, but no luck. All the other lights work fine.

Beak has got this one right on the money. It is the ground wire coming from that turn signal/parking light assembly that is not making good contact or that has broken. I had the same problem after doing some electrical work on my 79 264GL and it turned out to be that I accidentally left the turn signal/parking light ground unattached thus giving me a non-working turn signal but a blinking parking lamp. Located the wiring harness for the turn signal/parking lamp in question and look for a ground wire that comes from it. The left turn signal/parking light assembly grounds out at the bracket holding up the headlight relay, junction box, and cooling fan relay. The right turn signal/parking light assembly grounds out near the washer bottle along the fender. You will be suprised what wierd things can happen when you have a loose ground wire. Good Luck!

Sincerely,

Due to its offset "bayonet" lugs, it should not be possible to insert the bulb incorrectly, but if it did happen, you would see what you are indeed seeing. But you would also see, when you switched on the running (called 'parking' lights, also) the offending bulb would be much brighter than the other side. If you have this, the bulb is definitely inserted 180deg. rotated from the correct position.

That said, it's more likely to be a grounding problem.

Check your ground on the turn signal and make sure it is real clean as sometimes a poor ground will give you a circut feedback that will do strange things to your lights.

that's low miles for and 85...barely broken in. About the light, sounds like a cross wire somewhere.
