83' 242Ti idling problems 200

The car starts up fine and idles well for a few minutes, with the O2 sensor reading about .45v, but after a few minutes the rpm will start to fluctuate, and the O2 reading will start to drop to about .25-35v and then come back up to .5-6v. The main problem is that sometimes the readings will drop all the way down to .15-20v and this will cause the car to stall before it can recover.

Once warmed up and running the car runs well, I have done a full tuneup recently (injector seals, vacuum lines, fuel filter, air filter, cap\rotor, plugs\wires, intake manifold gasket) and the vacuum is stable throughout.

I did notice however that I need to replace the thermostat, as the car takes forever to warm up now that the weather has cooled down, and when I started it today I could feel warm coolant flowing through the top radiator hose very quickly after startup in 40F weather, and well before the temp guage even began to rise.

The question is, could this be related to a very slow warm up due to the failed thermostat, or could it be caused by something else?

Thanks for any ideas,

Deffinitly try replacing the themostat. If the O2 sensor is unplugged before starting does the engine still have the idle problem. Mine has always gone through a minor idle instability phase during warm up. I've concluded that the Lambda system starts modulating the mixture before the sensor is up to operating temperture. This then results is too lean a mixture for a short time.

Thermostat replaced, problem seems to be taken care of. The old thermostat was broken, letting coolant leak past into the radiator the entire time resulting in a very slow warmup. It didn't help that the airbox is modified removing the warm air tube, and the car is intercooled.

Now it warms up and idles fine without stalling.

hi there. as i understand it the 02 sensor signal doesnt come into play until it heats up, and lambda is in default dwell until then. i installed new 02 sensor and reading fluctuates very very quickly yours might be lazy. check and adjust throttle switch per bentleys. cleaning throttle body and idle control valve helped me. my 85 turbo starts right up when weather is cool in morning but hard to start when hot and sunny. im thinking c.p.r. will test tomorrow with new guage from j.c.w. if i can figure out how. please post back if you make progress as this is where i learn. good luck

I have no proof to back this up - my car does the same thing.

But, with fluctuations in oxygen like that, I almost wonder if the gas fluctuates in the same manner. I'd almost want to suspect the Cold Start Injector assembly. Maybe the regular injectors are overcompensating for what the cold start injector isn't doing???

Once Again its speculation, but maybe a start.

I have no good answer but make sure the mixture and base idle are set as per the Bentley. Then check the frequency valve circuit on the fuel injection relay and the freq. valve relay. Not sure where to go then. I wonder if the thermal vacuum valve is involved? Porkface??
