960 engine swap fiesta! 900

First, and hopefully last, time doing a 960 engine swap. Any body have any suggestions or recommendations of things I should do to make things easier? I'm leaving the transmission as it's in good shape although I'm sure the tork bolts holding the flywheel to the transmission will try to convince me otherwise.
Thanks

Jes

All,
Thanks for your input- and thanks especially to PJM for the PDF. It will provides a comprehensive list of things to check during the process. I'll be in touch with you shortly.

I left the transmission in the car during the engine replacement on my '93 960. I pulled the intake manifold loose along with all of the wiring that was attached to the engine components. The 960 engine replacement was no more difficult then any other engine swap I have done. Just take your time and label the connections and you shouldn't have any problems either.
Good luck!

You are making things way more difficult for yourself by detaching the trans in the car...I've done this motor/trans R&R 4 times since May of this year...disconnect the shift lever, drop the trans support beam and it comes out with the motor like a breeze...much easier to uncouple the trans when it is out of the car. TRUST ME!

I swapped mine out at this time last year. Like you, I left the trans in place. I found the bolts no problem to break loose and remove. What year engines, the same years? I put a 92 engine into my 94, had to make some modifcations to use the wider timing belt from the 94, some other minor differences, the oil separator is slightly different and the injector and coil ground points are little different too. How many miles? Maybe think about changing out the rear main seal on the replacement engine, and the input shaft seal on the trans while they are apart.

There are a couple of people that post here who could change these engines in there sleep, hopefully you will be hearing from them. As I am not a mechanic, I know just enough to be dangerous. Ignorance can be bliss sometimes but not usually working around cars. Good luck, I found the swap a great experience and very rewarding.

I had to change the engine rear main seal on my car at about 110K last year. I asked the good independent garage about doing the transmission input seal at the same time. They said NO!

The story they gave me is that the seal never fails and you are likely to damage either the shaft or the housing while trying to change it. Apparently the design of the seal is special/robust and requires special tooling to change it.

Ignorance is bliss sometimes? It did not seem so special to me it pop right out with a seal pick, the new one slide right in. Guess I got lucky.

The trans seal replacement didn't cause any problems on my '93 960 either. Maybe we were both lucky!
