timing belt issue on 91 200

I thought I was getting close to pulling this off. It's my first timing belt replacement. I changed front seals and changed tensener but after putting on new belt I put only the crankshaft pulley without putting lower cover on so I could make two revolutions and check marks. When I start turning it the belt is working itself off. It seems like it's the tensioner or maybe crankcase gear to tensioner is off center, I can't tell but then it starts coming off at the camshaft too. Is it becouse I have to have the lower cover on to keep belt alligned. I would certainly have it on after checking marks but I was trying to save time. Which it is now dark and raining. Help much appreciated.

    ditto on the tensioner 200

    lenny,

the tensioner is a bitch to get back in place if it is cocked. It may be easier with two people, one to pull the tensioner back in place, and then a second to jam a nail in the hole to keep it slack. Then once you get the belt back in place, gently pull back on the tensioner and remove the nail or whatever.

I just did this not more than three weeks ago on a buddy's 240 and had to reset the tensioner three times because it wasn't seated properly against the block.

I assume you retighten the Tensioner after you loosened it to tighten up the belt. If it stays loose, it will cock a bit.
If the Tensioner isn't seating correctly against the block , it will cause the belt to walk even when tight.

If you look down the belt, Can you see which Gear or Tensioner is tweaked from the others?

make sure the tensioner is not cocked and flush against the block. make sure the crank gear is on right, the nub on the face faces the outside, engages the outer belt guide and the front pulley. make sure the belt guides are correct, they need to be at the widest, like a large v surrounding the crank gear. maybe the cam or aux shaft gears aren't tight? all i got, good luck, chuck.

The first line says it all: make sure the tensioner is seated all the way into the head.

You don't need the covers on for alignment - I have seen cars around where the covers are missing.

Almost certainly the tensioner is the problem. But even with everything aligned it can still be tricky getting the belt to run straight. You have to have it absolutely in the right place on each sprocket before you try turning it. If one is a little bit off it doesn't correct itself, but works its way to the edge and starts misaligning the others too. Look at the wear marks on the sprocket teeth for a guide to where the old belt was running.

You have tightened the tensioner before turning? If you try to turn it over a few times first, thinking to get it all aligned and then tighten the tensioner, WRONG - the tensioner sits at an angle unless tight.
