Lift a Brick??? 200

I was wondering if anyone has experience of lifting a 240 (wagon in my case)? I have an 87 and could really use some more ground clearance for some of the roads I need to take. I certainly don't want a Brick-Foot but 6-10 more inches would be great. Would this be possible with the car still operating okay? How entailed a job is this? Any ideas of likely costs? Thanks for any input,
John

    Speedo accuracy be damned ...

An inch or two can be gained with
    - 205/70/15 tires.
    - Overload wagon springs.
    - Diesel or V6 front springs.

Beyond that, you're looking at much more serious work. Custom coil-over up front for more space, perhaps a custom lower A-arm for more drop, longer springs and shocks in the back, and wheel wells and arches cut out for larger tires (perhaps some 31's).

Or just plop the 240 on a rolled truck chassis.

I have no words of wisdom for you, unless you want to canibalize it and make it into like, half a volvo and half some other truck. But if you do get it to work somehow...post pictures please, it should look cool i would think..just dont keep the 14-15 inch wheels!

Yes you can indeed get 6 to 10 inches of ground clearance but it will involve doing a few things.. One is to sell the brick wagon and two is to take the money you have from the sell and buy a Hummer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)Max

it seems like you need some suspension work. Although there is a way to raise it 1-2 inches. There are rubber mounts that you mount on the springs. I did that to a buddy's car. Pretty reliable over the years.

Are you sure your current suspension is up to the task? It sounds to me like it's sagging if you are really bottoming out a lot.

I live in Portland where there are lots of hills and bad roads, and I before I replaced my struts, I use to bottom out every once and a while. A new set of struts later, and all is well.

    Good luck!

I agree wholeheartedly. A proper suspension should have 5-6 inches of clearance at the center of the differential.

You must have suspension problems. You say you want to add 8-10 inches of ground clearance. If you *really* need 13+ inches of ground clearance, you shouldn't be driving any car on that road.

As a comparison, a Ford F-350 Super Duty 4x4 has 9.3 inches of clearance.

I'd sure need to sell a lot of Bricks to get enough $$$ for a Hummer! (and I'd never drive such a silly beast even if it was an option). My suspension is fine, nothing is sagging, I just need more clearance for the roads I need to take; they have wheel grooves and high rocks in places but are fine for even small pickups and my old car, which was a Subaru Forrester. The all/4-wheel drive isn't needed, I just need approximately as much clearance as the Subaru. There's a great Volvo guy here in Vegas. If he can do something, I'll put on some bigger tires and post a photo upon completion. Don't worry, I won't "look down" and ya'all!
