exhaust noise- 1984 245 dl 200 1984

I am very confused about a noise coming from my exhaust. When I start the car, usually after it has been sitting for a while, I hear a loud rumble from the back, and then once I start moving, there is a rumble and a squeak together (squeak sounds like metal on metal), but it stops after 20 feet of driving. I just moved and had the pipe that is connected to the exhaust manifold and before the cat replaced before I did so. The rest of the system in back was good, it's fairly new. What could this be? I had the exhaust system inspected by what I thought was a good mechanic out here, but he couldn't find anything. It's really starting to freak me out.

That pipe has a bolt hole or two to anchor to a bracket that apears to come off the transmission - when looking from above.

Aftermarket pipes usually don't line up right and are left unattached at that bracket. Volvo pipe is pricey, so you usually are sold an aftermarket pipe.

Result: vibration, banging, odd sounds.
Have a look to see if that's your situation.
We had that job done on an '83 and two '89's.

Cures:
1) Cut off bracket with torch
2) Heat pipe and bend it out of the way.
3) Use Volvo pipe??
4) Modify pipe to mount to bracket?
5) Other cures??

Hi -

In your shoes I would drive to a nearby Meineke Muffler shop (one close to me is run by motorheads) and have them put the car up on a lift with the engine running.

That should give them, and you, a shot at looking and wiggling and listening to the entire system.

Good Luck,

Bob

you should check to see that all hangers are good shape and that all pipes are not to close to the undercarige i would also check your motor mounts and trans mount if these are bad that will make the exhaust move around to much causeing all sorts of noises from exhaust .
