which hose is this...and what does it go to? oh and what screw? 200 1987

Recently acquired an 87-245. This is my tutorial car. I'm learning how to fix things myself. I took the throttle body off this weekend and cleaned it out.
I forgot to clear all the brass nipples. Guess I'll have to do that again now.

Onto my question, when I was removing it a hose came off in my hand. I don't know which hose this is, but....
It was cracked and taped poorly so I want to replace it before I try to start the car.
This is where it came from:
Where the big hose (the one with the big clamp) connects to the T-body there are two smaller hoses that go into the big hose. One has a clamp and the other does not. The non clamped hose is what needs to be replaced.
It has a sharp turn in it on the end that goes into the big hose and I have not idea where this hose connects to. It seems to bend to under the intake manifold where you can't see and can bareley feel.
So, can anyone figure this out for me?

Also I had to replace a belt that literally popped apart. It was the belt to the a/c I think. The longest of the single belts.
Ok..I finally found all the bolts to move the a/c and get this thing on. I had
pulled on everything that would move earlier and then when tensioning the belt back after loosening the p/s belt the screw broke off on the tensioner.

I think you have to have the right size and pitch of screw to replace this.
Any idea what the specs are and where I should go to get one?
Or should I just carry this broken screw into the hardware store and take my luck with the clerk?

You guy are the best.
Thanks, I'll check it all out.
Sounds like the flame trap to me too.
When I cleaned it out (first repairs)
It went on there awfully easy.
That explains a lot.

I'll send an update when I get this all sorted out.

The hose you describe is from the air intake to the IAC valve below the intake manifold. You can buy a replacement or get another one at the pick-a-part cheap.

Take your bolt to an Auto part store - it's probably a common metric 8 or 10 mm size. Even Home Depot might have one in their metric nuts/bolts assortment.

I'm certain that the hose in question goes to the flame trap. It's attached to the intake hose on one end without a clamp (faces the back of the engine compartment), and then curves around under the intake manifold to the flame trap on the other end.

The hose as mentioned below sounds like the flame trap. It's much easier the second time.
The 700/900 FAQS in the Brickboard menu also applies (in many cases) to our 240's.
I get my replacement fittings like tensioners, screws, AMM's, etc. from other 240's in the junkyard, AKA pickapart. It's cheap, you recycle, and the parts fit.
Good Pluck.

I'm afraid I'll be of no help with replacing the screw, however, if it is one of the really long tensioning bolts that run parallel to the belts, I think people frequently break those, then simply lever the item so that the belt is taut, then lock down the bolts (prependicular to the belts) to hold the item in place. I know I've done it with the alternator, but nothing else so far.

As for the hose you've described, it sounds like the hose that makes a sharp bend is the one that leaves the plastic air intake tube, and runs down to the Idle Air Controller Valve (look up IAC for more reference). Should be an easy hose to replace, as there's the clamp you can easily see up at the throttle body, and then runs down to a cylindrical object underneath the intake manifold, I believe that is connected with a hose clamp (either use a screwdriver, or probably an 8 mm wrench or nut-driver to loosen.) use a flashlight. will be even easier if you already have the throttle body off to clean out the nipples. The dealer (or as I like to think of it as, the official volvo sanctioned ripoff joint) will have this tube, or you could probably get one online, try FCP Groton. If that hose is bad, you might also consider checking the one that leaves the IAC as well.

make sure you clean the flame trap and check the associated lines and hoses too.

If the hose is about 1/2" to 5/8 rubber", no braiding it probably goes to the flame trap, which you can look down and see between intake runners 3 and 4. There is also a smaller vacuum line going to it (maybe 1/4-3/8"). If that big hose is what you have knocked off, you should get it replaced. The small vacuum line to the flame trap is what keeps all the seals in your motor from blowing out, and it should regularly be checked as well as the brass nipple on the intake manifold. The large hose is actually where the blowby and other crankcase vapors exit the motor and re enter it in the intake air where it is later burned by the motor. It being broken should cause a sizeable vacuum leak (off idle at least). Someone might be able to clarify that.

Anyways, if you search the archives for flame trap, you might be able to find a picture and ensure it is that hose.

Shine a flashlight around where ever that hose will reach and you should find an empty nipple .... that would be where your hose goes.

as far as the bolt is concerned... take the screw into the hardware store, I have found that ACE Hardware is good as far as having a lot of varied types of hardware and having people to help when needed.

someone will probably be able to tell you exactly where the hose goes too.

good luck, I too have learned how to fix cars with my Volvo 245 wagon... I ended up falling in love with my addiction - fixing it up!
