sticking front brake 700 1987

I have girling calipers on my 760 wagon, UK spec., about 82000 miles. About 1500 miles ago I replaced the front brake pads. To start with, no problems. Now I have the brakes, particularly at right hand front side sticking, i.e. they don't ease off the pressure after I brake, resulting in vibration, loss of power and excessive petrol consumption.

What should I suspect, sticking pistons, jammed pads or what? And how should I correct? If it is the pistons, should I attempt to repair, or am I better off replacing the calipers (to my financial detriment no doubt).

Any useful advice is highly appreciated.

Check the caliper guide pins for sticking.

Thanks for your help, nice to see the UK Volvo community is alive and kicking, I will check the guide pins. Do you think it could equally be a sticking piston?

If you find one of the pads more worn than the other, it usually points to sticking of the floating caliper mechanism.

Thanks. By floating caliper mechanism, do you mean the pistons? And could I repair this, or would I be best to replace the caliper?

No I dont mean the pistons (but you can check that these move freely too). The outer part of the caliper slides on 2 shafts. To change the pad you usually unbolt one long screw, after which the outer-part of the caliper can be hinged upwards. These shafts can sometimes get badly jammed. In my case I lubricated over a couple of hours and then took a monkey-wench slowly removed it. I then cleaned the shaft and socket thoroughly, regreased it (high-temp grease) and put it back. It's been 6 years now and it still works fine.

I'm not a great advocate of replacing stuff unless it's broken or totally unrepairable.
