changed the oil today.....a couple of questions 900

is the brass nipple under the oil filter used to drain the oil cooler hose? If so, it seems only a small amount of oil would come out and if so is it worth draining?

I have the IPD automatic transmission flush hose I used often on my 240. I assume, again, this will work on my 944T. Will it?

the front muffler has several small holes in it that I am sure won't pass VA inspection. any recommendations on which muffler to get? also I have a single outlet rear muffler and see a dual muffler is cheaper on one of the support web sites of brickboard. any problems converting it?

as soon as I get the muffler changed and the car inspected, I am off to the races.

The brass nipple is a coolant drain. Those hoses, to one of which it is connected, take a beating from oil drips, so replacement is not a bad idea. If they burst, all your coolant quickly disappears.

The brass nipple is to drain the coolant. It's a very neat way to drain it out compared to the disaster I used to go through with my old 240, pulling off the bottom radiator hose.

I'd guess the IPD hose will also fit the 940... don't know for sure.

Is the brass nipple the right way to drain the radiator? 900

I will most likely be changing my water pump soon, is this brass nipple the right way (or the easiest / least messy way) to drain the radiator first? ('93 945T)

        Dear Heat,

May this find you well. It is. Anti-freeze (mostly ethylene glycol) is attractive for - and lethal to - small animals (e.g., cats, dogs) on account of its sweet taste. I'd guess you'll want to capture the old coolant, even if you don't plan to re-use it. If you get a piece of clear plastic tubing, about 1/2" (inside diameter), you can put it over the end of the nipple, and still use a wrench to open the drain. The tubing will direct the coolant into a pan or jug.

I did this on a 93 945 normally-aspirated car, and it worked perfectly.

When you drain the coolant, let the engine reach operating temperature and turn the heater control to max, so that the thermostat and heater valve open, allowing all of the coolant - including that in the heater core - to be flushed-out.

When you re-fill, also make sure the heater valve is open. You may need to "burp" the car, to remove any air bubbles. This can be done by putting the car on an incline (a hill or ramps), first "nose-up" and then "nose-down".

        Hope this helps.

        Yours faithfully,

        spook
