I recently replaced the threaded rods that connect the fan clutch to the pully coming off of the water pump - there is a good bit of play there - I thought it was because I had not tightend the bolts down on the plate of the water pump...but it seems that it is tight against it and there is play in the actual water pump shaft...is this normal? Anyone come across this?

The water pump bearing is worn. Replace the water pump before it strands you.

John,

Thanks again for the advice - replaced the pulley and it went off without a hitch. Those volvo engineers know how to make a car servicable. Appreciate the tip becuase I am preparing to take a long trip and that would have stranded me for sure.

Thanks John, I assumed as much when I was at the junk yard this weekend and noticed the pumps there were solid. Appreciate the advice - will pull it this weekend.
