Clunk/creak noise when first stepping on the brake 900 1993

Hoping I can get some educated opinions on this noise. It happens only when I first step on the brakes pulling out of my driveway. It's kind of a "creaky clunk." The first one is the most noticeable, and there might be one or two lesser ones before it goes away.

My first guess was brakes, but I've had them apart and the sliders seem free and well-lubed. After doing some reading, I suppose it could be ball joints, but the car is quiet going over bumps and such, and the steering and suspension feel pretty tight for a car with 130k on it.

Has anyone else experienced this? It takes only a gentle application of the brakes to induce it, and there are no other symptoms other than the noise.

Thanks!

I had a similar problem with my 740 , that was caused by the wishbone stay bushes.

Mine were almost totally perished (for you, Colin) at 127K miles. But I was getting severe braking shudder—more than just a noise. Maybe Inga's are in the early stages.

I drove it today with a more critical ear. The sound is definitely more of a creak than a clunk, and I can hear it a little if I repeatedly coast and brake, coast and brake, but it's not as loud as when I first start out. Lately I do seem to be getting something that might be described as "braking shudder" but the pads are definitely not worn. i shall have to investigate these bushings.

It happens when you reverse out the driveway? Might be the suspension moving due to force in the opposite-than-usual direction. Get the top mounts for the front struts checked out. With age/use the metal and rubber seperates, giving play under heavy load in the strut top mount. To replace it the whole strut/spring needs to be taken out. You might be able to check it by popping the hood and removing the plug over the strut fixing bolt. You might see the rubber seperating from the metal. Sometimes it can be made better without removal by fitting a washer cut to the right size to give more thread for the nut to be tightened, but I do not know exactly how. The local shock shop did that for me on a 760, with minor improvement. Might also be the strut itself.

    Have fun...

No, I generally notice the sound while moving in a forward direction. It might be present when backing out of the garage, but that is at a still slower speed. I will check the struts. Thanks!
