Nox NJ emissions - Round 5 - Success!!! 900 1993

1993 940 NA Rex Regina

Bottom line - It turned out to be the cat after all.

Here's the saga. Overdue for emissions.
Round 1 3200 ppm Nox
Round 2 1600 ppm after changing plugs, air filter and running injector cleaner through and 1000 miles later.
Round 3 1600 ppm after replacing temp sensor and MAP sensor (had a code 1X)
Round 4 2100 ppm after replacing O2 sensor. My mileage is better! It was 12 years old anyway - probably due.
Round 5 217 ppm with new cat. Old cat was 1 year old Bosal. Nick at FCP found one made in NJ by A&B parts. What's interesting here is that these guys asked if it was Regina or Bosch, since they said they had a different cat for each. (However, the sticker said it was made in Canada)

So, hats off to Nick and FCPGroton for coming through again.

Tom

Nox NJ emissions - Round 5 - Success!!! 900 1993

Congratulations!

If you can find the time I'm interested what your HC and CO were doing during each test. Also, the state limits would be helpful too.

I'm trying to diagnose a high (failing) Nox and close to limit HC and CO, mechanic who tested says "new cat converter...$275", before I go that route (doing it myself though) I plan on re-setting my base idle, CO, and checking for vacuum leaks. My O2 sensor doesn't fluctuate as I think it should and it's brand new...

Thanks,
Bean

Nox NJ emissions - Data 900 1993

Thanks for the data. I just got back from vacation and had forgotten about this message.

I plan on checking everything on my car before I go ahead with the cat converter, although I just might put one in since a new one from FCP is $125, it's almost "cheap" passing insurance considering if I fail my re-test I'll have to pony up another $50 for the next round of testing.

Thanks again,
Bean

I can't specifically recall, but both did drop. One was also high (HC I think) The NJ spec is .69, and I was .8. Also, I think CO was close to the limit too. Post test, everything was not even close to the limit.
I can get you specific numbers a little later.

The new proper cat did affect all the numbers.

Tom
