Odo gear for the Yellow Peril 140-160 1973

Worked some on the odometer when we were putting the dash together on the
Yellow Peril. I set the mileage at 150005. I know it is more than that but
have no clew how much more. It ran up to 150011 and quit.
We took it out this morning and found the little white gear that runs it has
a crack in it from the center hole all the way to the outside, so no
interference fit on the shaft. No wonder it slips!

I looked at the odos from the two other dash panels I have of that type.
One gear has one crack and another one has 4 cracks!

Back in hazy memory there seems to be a few strings about someone who was
making new odometer gears for these cars. Can anybody remember who it was
or how I can find such a toothy animal, uncracked and maybe new?

    George,

If no one comes up with one, I will be taking my functioning ribbon style out of the 164, soon.

      Many thanks, Kent!
I don't think the ribbon-style odo has the same gear, at least it seems
not to have the same problem. I do have a couple spare earlier dash panels.

    Perhaps you're thinking of
http://www.odometergears.com/. Excellent reproduction gears (I used one in my DL) but a little pricey.

You might first check Dave Shannon's repair method at http://www.homestead.com/volvo2/Odometer.html

Thanks for the links. I've got 3 speedometers for my 74 144 and neither one of them has a working odometer, hence the "low" miles (80,000 miles) for a 31 year old car. By the way, the one that is in the car right now was bought new a few years ago, but quit working already. I guess dial type gauges are not Volvo's strong point. I checked with Irv Gordon and he has had his fixed "a couple of times" over the course of 2 million miles because he was, uh, "losing credit."

Yes, that is exactly what I was thinking of. Not sure if it is the same
gear but I note that other makes have differing numbers of teeth.
I will consider that when we get flu$h.
      Many thanks!

    George,
I've got a couple of the ribbon type units lying around, if you think that the gear out of one of those would do the trick, I'll gladly dismantle one and send you the gadget.
