Heater Control valve - Alternatives? 200

Has anyone installed a HCV other than the junkyard replacement or the IPD/FCP new style?

Just curious.

I bought an original style valve this year from a local National Auto Parts store. However, this outfit is not your average, they really look for a source before they say it isn't available and found two listings. I don't remember what it cost but it looked identical to the original. The box said made in the USA, one part of the valve said made in GB, another said made in Spain. Now if I could just banish the electrical gremlins.

Autozone sells a 240 heater valve for around $25 but I've never tried one nor read a post from anyone who has. jp

How about a new replacement for the original Ranco? I've used those; found my last one on ebay. Can't imagine they're just no longer available.

I am probably going to try that. My wife's heater did not straighten itself out (I was dreaming that it would).

I also think something more may be going on.

Problem #1 The heat doesn't turn off
      but

Problem #2) it also doesn't come in real well unless the car is accellerating.
What might be up with that?

I'm just now healing from the battle with the scan tech control from last year....

Had same problem w/ my 90 240. turned out to be a defective thermostat. Support arc released valve but bent on closure and so sucker never closed. Try Maine to Mass Pike at 3Am in Jan. Had to keep it at 85 or freeze to death!

        Hey Miguel

interesting reading about these heater valve issues, as I'm thinkin' I'll have to replace my valve at some point in the near future. it's been doing the (binary) off or full on thing for about three years... though it's not leaking heat when off (yet, and knock on wood).

As for the heat coming through only when accelerating, my theory is that at higher revs, as the water pump is spinning faster, there's higher water pressure hitting up against the valve, and some is able to squirt through. thus you're getting heat when accelerating. What happens if you just hold the RPM's up while not accelerating? i'll bet you still get heat. then at the lower rev's, there's not enough water pressure to force a detectable amount of hot coolant through the leaky valve.

just my opinion, for what it's worth,
        good luck with it though.

I agree. A while back I had the same trouble - not only heat, but radiator flow was non-existent until higher revs. I think the water pump (on the left) had very shallow impeller profile.

            Art,
Wow ! That is a massive difference. What brand was to lame-o impeller?
And what brand was the good one? A pump, new (used) valve and maybe a flush of the core should do it.

I am trying to convince my wife to drive my sedan while I take hers apart and solve the problem. I guess when it gets cold she'll turn it over and I'll freeze!

Thanks as always for the great input people!

              Miguel,

The lame pump was one from WAP (local store) I bought just for the return pipe o-ring one rushed Saturday morning working on a different car. There was no name on the casting; only a white box with the Airtex name. The flash of rust you see was after only one day of use, basically installing and then removing when it didn't want to keep up at idle.

The pump on the right is HEPU. So far I like those pumps.

Before swapping the pump, give heed to Stoney's experience with the sticky tstat; it is certainly an easier, cheaper fix.

If you go to the old valve, after doing the new style, you're probably going to need a hose, I guess. Well, you'd know if you had to cut a hose when you converted.

I was looking a little closer .... It seems the PO had worked under the dash. I remember some disconnected vents and the vacuum lines were disconnected as well.

                I
Perhaps the hoses are crossed. If this is so I am getting water from the pump through the heater core and then it is stopped at the valve.

What if I cross the lines at the firewall?

Worth a try.... AFTER I check the t-stat.

I thought they'd all be the same. But the pic shows otherwise. Something we should all watch out for.
