240DL Wagon: Unexpected failing on highway 200 1990

Hi. Driving along on a beautiful autumn weekend afternoon. 10 miles in, all warning lights begin blinking off and on. Exited highway. Rattling noise began, increased to considerable intensity. Smoke began spewing from left side of hood as I was facing it. Pulled over. Opened hood. Huge splash of liquid all over. Water? Dark enough to be oil. Radiator looked okay, hoses, but I am not mechanical. Tow driver guessed water, but the loud rattling sound as he started engine to drive onto lift seemed of concern. Will get diagnosis Monday from mechanics. Meanwhile, can anyone guess what this was? Only problems waiting for fix are power steering rack and pinion, and overdrive troubles. Thanks for any opinions.

Ok now keep in mind that this is not much to go on and I just really want to throw a WAG into the ring.

I'm going to say that the fanclutch is shot and that took out the water pump (one or the other doing the rattling)... maybe water on the electrics set off the idiot lights...

    just guessing...

Thanks to all. Got the diagnosis today and Bret scores: Water pump blew out. Fan (clutch?) got stuck. 2 belts ruined: Alternator +? ). Not sure of all the dynamics, but am glad it's "only this." While they're doing this work, I'm having them examine the timing belt, which I don't think has ever been replaced. Heard that if this goes, you're in for big $$$ repairs. Thanks again. (I really love this forum and should probably get a user name/password.)

Not sure if this applies to your model, but it sounds like the seal on the back of the valve cover ... look at

Sounds as though you blew a coolant hose and lost all the coolant. The rattling noise is not good at all: could be engine troubles from loss of coolant.
Let me guess: your car has the original radiator, hoses, and heater water valve?

      Hello Steve,

I just bought a 1990 240 DL with 131k miles on it. And it sounds like radiator, hoses and heater water valves are a common failure for the cars at this age?

How do I tell whether they should be changed? Or do I just replace them as a precaution?

      Thanks.

Hi Steve. Thanks for responding. You are right about the car having the original radiator, etc. It has 140,000 miles on it, approximately. So, in a short space of driving to get off the highway, the engine could have been damaged/ruined? I fear tomorrow's report.
