260 gle water pump replacement 200 1980

i have a 1980 260 gle that i will be attempting to replace the water pump on. does anyone have some advice or know of a place that has instructions i can follow on how to do this. thanks much

also on a related note...on some cold days a mysterious smoke comes out of my dash vents. it is definitley smoke and it increases when the heater is on. is this definitly a sign of a need for a new heater core or could it be related to the faulty water pump, because i had the heter core tested a few months ago and it stood up to a large amount of pressure.

THANKS for any help
Ben

Yeah, I can help out some. I've done at least half a dozen of em, and it's no picnic since you have to pull the intake manifold to get to it. My Haynes manual was pretty good for procedure. Number or label every wire and hose you remove and draw a diagram of where they were connected since there's so many. Make sure to replace the hoses attached to the Y pipe underneath that manifold too. The pump is sold without the back cover and boy was that a b*tch to remove. I wound up lapping it flat with a piece of 600 grit sandpaper and oil laid flat on a piece of glass, just move the cover around in circles on top of the oil/sandpaper/glass until the mating surface is uniform. Anything that takes an O-ring or a copper washer gets a new one. Be careful to get the key for the fan properly oriented on reassembly, it can seem tight but sctually be tigthened on itself rather than onto the fan hub.

i'm curious, why pull the intake? if just the water pump is needed, i don't understand. if you're replacing the orings that seal the y-pipe to the block, ok. i've sold a bunch of pumps and done 1, a b27, and no one needed to pull the intake. thanks, chuck.

a) because the manual said to do it that way and b) how exactly do you get the big hose off the Ypipe if the hose clamp screws aren't facing in a convenient direction, and have giant hands that don't fit anywhere like me? It's how i've always done 'em, and the intake manifold isnt exactly a huge deal on a B27/28F anyways. If i have to do a water pump on a 6banger, i am damn sure going to replace every Oring and rubber hose under that manifold because i don't want to have to climb back in there over a stupid shortcut.

i can appreciate the hose clamp position. i also believe you're correct in doing it right, i.e., replace everything. it's just that the customer doesn't always see it the same way. i was hoping there was something you were doing that i had missed. thanks, chuck.
