760 GLE not runnnig possible fuel pump bad? 700 1987

Alright well.

when this all started out of nowhere my car started to pug and maybe about a mile or 2 after that started my car just plain stopped. once I tried to start it up again it would try and turn on for a second and then just everything would shut off..exp. all lights on dash, radio, lights in car. i'd wait around for about 10 mins and then it would catch and it would act like nothing happened. but still wouldn't turn on.

well now the cars been in my driveway. we've checked all the fuses, looked at the relays, checked cables for any loose cables, re-did the battery cable and got new battery, checked coil, put in new oil filter and more oil.

so about now all I can do is attempt to turn on my car. it doesn't do much of anything. I have no idea where the fuel pump is on my car. I've looked everywhere I can't find jack. we're thinking that's the problem cause when we try and hear the pump prime we don't hear anything.

any of you can help me out?

    Hello:

The fuel pump is underneath the driver's seat in the North American market cars. That said, I'm thinking electrical, not fuel.

I'm not totally clear on what you mean by everything shutting off-- do you mean absolutely no power to anything? If so, replace both positive and negative battery cables after carefully cleaning all attachment points.

Next thing, to deal with a no-start once power is available again, resolder the fuel injection relay.

Next, if that doesn't fix it, swap the identical relays attached to the coolant bottle. One is for the auxillary rad fan, the other is the radio suppression relay for the fuel injection. They can be resoldered too-- it's just more work to get them open...

Next consider the flywheel reference sender on the bell housing of the transmission.

After that, I'd look to the power stage (ignition amplifier) on the driver's side near the battery.

Post back with some more detailed symptoms if you can...

    Good luck!

Pull the spark plug wires one by one and see if you are getting spark. If not it could be your Hall Sensor pickup in the distributor. If you crank your engine and your tachometer needle doesn't move , this is a sign of a bad Hall sensor. If it goes bad the pumps won't run. You have two pumps, one in the tank and the main pump, under the car in a cage mounted near the driver's side rear wheel. You can disconnect the harnesses and apply +12 v DC to the pump terminals to see if they run, or you can jumper two of the terminals for the pump relay and they should run. Another thing to look for is cracked solder joints in the Fuel Pump Relay. There is also an issue with Radio Supression Relays having bad solder joints. Look at the FEATURES pull down menu above....700/900 FAQ's...great info here!

    Good Luck!

PS. Got timing belt? Remove the oil filler cap and see if camshaft turns while engine is cranked.

      Hi:

No Hall Sensor pickup on the 760GLE-- it has a flywheel reference sensor instead. This v6 also has chains rather than a belt. I believe it is an interference pattern motor as well, so if a chain went it would be accompanied by some nasty sideeffects...
