Coolant Drain - Who's got the double secret password? S90-V90 1998

Tried changing 'all' the coolant in the S90 recently. Took the cap off the reservoir, opened the petcock on the bottom of the radiator, took the thermostat out(replaced) and opened the brass valve on the metal pipe coming out of the bottom front of the engine (only a few drops came out of this line)and I still only got about 'half' the coolant out.

What's the secret to getting all the coolant out? Does the fact that only a few drops came out of the brass valve mean the valve is plugged? The coolant that did come out looked in good shape with absolutely no debris. I'd be surprised if the valve had debris in it.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

forgot one more thing S90-V90 1998

Here are all the fluid specs for the 94 960 from Volvo's own service manual. Note there is nothing to suggest you have to use Volvo's propriatary coolant.

You must have a very good scanner, I can't believe how clear this image reproduced.

Thanks,

i got the secret password S90-V90 1998

Disconnect one of the two hoses going to the oil cooler next to the oil filter. That will give you another quart or so. No need to disconnect any hoses. Now if you still want to get some more out, leave the front wheels on the ground and lift the rear with some jack stands. Or you can just park on a slope. The point being if you look under the hood you will notice the engine is tilted toward the rear so a lot of oil gets trapped there.
Don't forget to flush the system with distilled water.
You can refill with the coolant of your choice as long as it says "aluminum safe" (most generic green)
Good luck
Justin

Draining coolant from a still engine is rarely very effective. Normally you need to have the engine running so the water pump in acting on your behalf. Disconnect the upper radiator hose and you pour fresh into the top of the running (warm) engine while it pumps old out of the top of the radiator. Stop when new starts coming out. It helps if you are using a different color or if you start with clear water and then swicth to anti-freeze mix when the clear water starts to come out.

90 series: I think you have to invert the car while the reservoir cap is open. (Smile!)

I gave that some serious consideration.

I think I would just pop off the lower radiator hose and let it drain that way. Are you on the original radiator on the s90?

Yes, I am on the original radiator.... waiting for it to blow, it's about due.
