High NOX solved.... 200

Hello, My car finally passed the smog test here in CA.after failing for high NOX. The symptoms was pinging and power loss on acceleration and going uphill.I have replaced the cat/in tank fuel pump/ main fuel pump/spark plug/rotor/distributor cap. However, the problem persisted. Finally gave up and took it to a mechanic blocks from my house. He replaced the 02s (it was orig. w/ 180000 miles on it!) and set the timing. Now the car has full power going uphill/acceleration and NOX dropped from 1470 to 680! Hope this helps bricksters who fail smog check for high NOX. By the way, the mechanic charge me $430 for diagnosis and the 02s...... OUCH!

That's a steep cost for the O2 sensor. I had the orig one on my '89 245 go out @ 245k.
My NOx was ~680, which is considered 'marginally acceptable' reading, and indicates a bad cat or mixture problem that caused the cat to go bad. The damage to the cat was done, so replacing the O2 sensor alone wasn't enough. I replaced the cat which started to rattle and the NOx went to 12!
I would suspect that you've clogged up the new cat from the problem that existed before you replaced it. Sorry to say that your problems may not be over.

    Hello,

Yep 430 is high for that considering it's the first thing any mechanic with half a brain would check if the car didn't pass emissions, the sensor is under 200 even from the dealer (FCP Groton sells a Bosch for 125, and a Walker universal for 50), takes 2 seconds to diagnose and 2 minutes to change.

But.... good to see your brick runs perfect now!!!
