Oil leak

hi all
sorry... this isnt related to a volvo but a car was leaking "oil". the engine oil level had gone from normal to v.low in 2 weeks... on taking it to the mechanic who had seen it 2 weeks b4 hand he sed taht it was the auto tranmission oil... is ther any way the tranmsission oil leak could cause the engine oil to burn?
