NO

You're correct, there is no way for a transmission fluid leak to cause engine oil to also leak.
It is of course possible for both engine and transmission to have serious leaks.

I would look for leakage at the front seals and valve cover on the engine. Clean the flame trap and make sure all breather hoses are clear as well- this can blow out seals.
The transmission is most likely to leak at the very back end, where the driveshaft comes out. This is called the tailshaft seal, and probably the seal and the bushing need replacing.
The trans can also leak from the pan, the housing seal in the middle of the gearbox, and from the cooler lines, usually along the side of the engine by the exhaust- there's a little clamp which causes the lines to rub and crack there.

flame trap?

You're a VW guy, do other cars have flame traps by name or PCV function with a screen? Not sure how I got this impression while reading the post- about a non-volvo, but what- I do remember how the engine could burn (not leak) tranny fluid. I believe the vacuum modulator was the first part I replaced on my first car.
