Remote Trunk Opener 200 1982

Hello,

I am looking into installing a remote trunk opener in my 82 242DL. There is a rectangle like opening to the left of the latch looking into the trunk. On my car the light is in that opening. Does the light have to be moved to put the motor in it's place. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks,

Mario

As Bob says, it's not to hard to install, But I prefer the "linear" (push-pull) solenoid type over the rotary style he mentions. I think the rotary is newer. I had 2 or 3 around once, from junkers.

I mounted my push-button just behind the upper left corner of the rear license plate (had to drill a hole there) and picked power off a green wire (always hot) in the left side harness (for antenna I think).

A slight push on the plate popped the latch. IMO, much handier than the stock location. No need to unlock the car.

Hey Bruce -

The pre-1986 flat-truck sedans had a different latch mechanism. Trunk was either locked or up. The change in 1986 was IMHO - a very good one.

That newer style uses the push-pull solenoid, and is wire just like the door lock actuators. Reversing polarity reverses solenoid direction.

Maybe that system would work on the pre-1986 latch mechanism anyway. I never tried that. I just found a wrecked 244 GL with the lock opening motor and installed it.

The 1982 242/244 may indeed not have the right holes. Volvo later began making things all the same, DL or GL, thus making any dealer-installed options easier.
What year did all the 240s get the red/white tach signal wire, whether the car came with or without a tach?

Regards,

Bob

Hi Bob,

Caveat—This is from memory...

I had collected several JY trunk solenoids (both styles) when I installed my 1st one on my '80 gle V8 back around '96. It was the push-pull, and a direct fit as I recall. Holes for the solenoid mount already there.

When that solenoid failed some time later, all I had left was a rotary (gave the others away for use as door latches on a street rod). But I seem to recall it being a PITA to relocate (i.e. drill) at least one solenoid mount screw hole in order to get the solenoid positioned properly.

So my "recollection" is that the earlier cars had the push-pull solenoid, at least that's what I installed most easily in the '80 trunk lid. Anyhow, I can attest to the fact that either will work, but one was easier for me.

On my 1984 244DL, there was an opening and screw holes to the right of the latch. The motor unit I found in a boneyard fit just right.

IIRC, I did have to remove the latching mechanism. It is not hard, just takes some study on how it's held in. There's a flat u-shaped thing that gets tapped off.

The motor unit has a rod that must connect to the latch, and if it can be connected to the latch with the latch still on the car, life's a lot easier.

I was pleased to find that the spot in the glove box for the switch (upper left) was easy to use, just drilled a hole. One wire only to the motor unit, the ground side can be connected same place as on the courtesy light.

We enjoyed using it. Takes just one push, the motor makes one revolution and "Pop" it's unlatched. (The motor will continue to rotate as long as the button is held down.)

Good Luck, It's a nice upgrade.

PS: I thing in BGVPD I have an extra push button with the little sign that goes under it.

Bob,

On my 82DL the are no special openings to the right of the latch. On the left side is the light. It looks like some models are different than others.

The opening (in the support web) would be a good 10" or so to the right of the latch. The solenoid has a link some 7" or 8" long, as I recall.

I think all lids were created equal, some got remotes, some didn't.

Bruce,

Thanks for the info. It looks like you find a spot to mount and wire it up job.

No, the motor for the remote trunk release goes to the right of the lock as you face the deck lid.
