I just got an old volvo-branded radio and a fuel pump with the glass top on it. I'm wondering what peoples' experiences are with these old type components?

I'm tempted to try the glass-top fuel pump because it "looks cool", but I'm guessing these were an early type which may have been improved upon with later versions? I don't even know if rebuild gaskets are available for these I must addmit.

As for the radio... it's just kind of cool also. Does anybody out there still have one installed and use it? It's from a '63 and I don't even know if it still works yet.

    The old type fuel-pump with glass top was fitted on the B18 engine from '62 to '64. (And also on every B16-engine)

    And yes! -you can get a rebuild-set of everything you need to get it just as good as the newer type. A complete rebuild-set comes with all gaskets, axel, screws and all, is around USD 80,- plus shipping. I'm sorry that I can't direct you to my site regarding fuelpump - that's one of the categories that are being builded at the moment..

    I haven't seen the Volvo glass top fuel pump but many of the old mechanical pumps I have had had a sediment bowl which was glass and was on the bottom of the pump.

    The gasket between the glass bowl and the pump must be intact or the pump will quit pumping, say somewhere out on the Mojave desert. Don't ask how I know this. If it does happen, you can make an emergency gasket out of the cardboard back of a school tablet.

    I have a Volvo by bendix radio ( about 61-64ish) for the PV, looks fantastic, sounds nice sitting on the bench, haven't tried it in the car yet but can't see any reason why it wouldn't be good. I have an original Blaupunkt radio ( 1966 ) in the amazon, works great.
    I had a glass fuel pump in a PV some years ago ( B18A ) it worked fine, I got a new diafram for it from my local AC Delco dealer, it was for an Izuzu truck of some sort, probably a light truck, I'm in New Zealand, I don't know if we have methanol in our petrol but as we have or certainly did have a big methanol gas to petrol plant here when I was running that car I wouldn't be at all surprised if we did.

      I have as yet to try getting the radio to work on the bench. That's cool that it still sounds good though!

    the times I have seen this fuel pump they were on B18 been used as boat engines. I was told the glass top worked as a fuel seperator ( which makes no sense) but I can say that any time you can see into your fuel system it is is handy.

      Yes, that's kind of why I'm attracted to trying to use it; it would be cool to be able to see if it's actually pumping fuel through. The new types of filters that I can find these days all seem to be metal and non-transparent. The cynical side of my says that this is just a ploy so that you have to change out filters more often because you can't see the damned build-up or condition inside the filter.

      Going on the post from below I may have to do a test on the filter rubber to see if the new types of gas might eat it. Seems like I could just do that by letting an edge of the rubber soak in some freshly bought gas and seeing what happens.

    Be a bit careful on the fuel pump as some places use methanol in the gas as an additive. While in Colorado they switched to the new style unleaded as an effort to reduce polution and we had a rash of the old pumps failing due to incompadability with the material the diaphram and the gasoline. If you go to the old style pump be sure to keep an eye out for leaks and also make sure it dosen't leak into the oil and dilute that with gas also runing the engine.
    Cool is cool but not at the expense of an engine or a car fire which always happens when you don't have an extinguisher handy.

        Test the pump outside of the car using kerosine (kerosene, lamp oil, lamp petrol), it fluid on the pump like gasoline but are a lot less risky. Check on the manuals the procedure an the amount of fluid it will be delivery after some pumping.

        I rebuild one glass pump on 2002 (rebuild kits ar not available here, I improvise some parts), it suffer of some leaking from time to time around the glass border. Now I use a modern IPD pump, its ugly, but work.
