door problems! 444-544

I have a '62 544. My driver's side door will not open from the inside once latched. My mechanic says that there's a part in there (I believe a small, plastic gear or bearing?) that has worn down.

Anyone out there know of a resource for this problem? It seems to be common for both 544's and 122's. THANKS IN ADVANCE!

As Matt suggested, if you can take a look at what is going on behind the door panel, then the problem should be tracked down. It might be as simple as a part that came loose. If not, then post what is holding things up and perhaps someone here can help you out.

On my '63 the problem turned out to be a broken latch release mechanism and the whole assembly had to be replaced. However, a call for help on this board resulted in finding the part at a reasonable price and freedom from having to open the window to let myself out by way of the exterior handle.

Best wishes,

Joe M

Its been a while but if memory is correct...

The inside door handle is attached to a solid metal rod. There is a small connection from this rod to the latch mechanism. If this connection comes loose, the inside door handle will not work.
Take the inside door panel off and it should make sense.
