Knowledge about fuel pump priming, anyone? 700

I'm helping a friend of mine with an intermittent hard start problem. I have noticed that the 1 second fuel priming function (when ignition key turned to II) is inoperative. It is an '88 with LH 2.4 so it should have this feature. Is an output transistor in the ECU fried, or is a wire from the ignition key to the ECU broken? I have tested the fuel relay in another -88, and it works fine.

Just wanted to know if there is anyone with more experience on this who could share some info. Any input appreciated!

    It could be due to:

    1. Relay not receiving power from ECU / Ignition.
    2. Pump(s) not receiving power from the Relay
    3. Pump not working
    4. Wiring issues between pumps, relay and ECU
    5. Intermittent problem with fuse 11 (unlikely but...)

1 and 2 could also be due to a bad connection between the relay-base-terminals and the fuse/relay board. Remove the relay and check the socket for burnt plastic etc. When this happens, the socket-terminals get pushed in and result in a bad-connection (if any) with the relay.

You can understand / fix this problem better using a 2.4 wiring diagram. If you dont have it, click here and search for 2.4 - you will need to scroll down a couple of pages.

      Excellent!

That was exactly what I was looking for. Will dig into it tomorrow!
      Thanks again Noel!

if the car is an 88, it's lh 2.2.

if it's really an lh 2.4, then it's an 89 or newer.

does the fuel pump run when the engine is cranked? i've seen alot of cars that do not prime with every key twist but always run the pump when cranking. good luck, chuck.

I know these "first used in" (year) things can be uncertain, but are you sure the '88 700 has LH 2.4?

I ask because the Bosch Injection Products catalog of 1992 shows the first 740 with an 016 AMM to be the '89 (same as 240). All '88 700s are listed as having the 007 AMM (LH 2.2, no Key On prime).

Does this car have the crank position sensor, OBD I Fault Code display, 016 AMM etc.?

      Yes, its a 2.4!!

Obviously, here in Sweden Volvo began using the 2.4 earlier. It has the OBD feature and no tuning screw for the AMM (016).

Now, when that is sorted out, do you have any ideas about the original problem, ie priming?!

        OK—sorry!!

"Obviously", if I had somehow miraculously realized you were in Sweden, I would not have dared question your assertion as to the LH vintage.

Care to disclose any other secret information that might help sort this out?!

Sorry Bruce, didn't mean to offend you. "Obviously" was obviously (haha) not a well chosen word. I blame it on my not being a native English speaker.

Got a nice schematic from Noel which hopefully will sort things out. What I was hoping for was that one of you guys immediately could pinpoint the origin of the fault so that I didn't have to dismantle the whole car to find the cause.

          Thanks indeed for your assistance!

            Good luck then.
All I can offer is that there is no external signal to the Fuel Relay except for the ECU-controlled relay ground from ECU 20 (Yellow/Black) to Relay 86/2. So I assume the "priming" control is governed by ECU logic.
