i was changing the valve cover gasket on a 78 242GT and while unbolting the cover discovered a little box being held down by one of the bolts. when i opened it up it has three connections in it. is it some sort of test point? what does it do?

It's a connector for a factory timing gauge; not too useful.

I agree. Toss it. The three grams weight saving will make your brick much faster.

Yeah. Cut off the cable where it joins the pickup in front of the bell housing.
