Help w/ Alternator Part, Please! 700 1990

Folks,

The apes at the local Sears tire center busted a bolt on my alternator, and the fiche does NOT have a part # (believe it or not). I'll describe it here, perhaps someone knows the part # or has a spare laying around?

1990 765T (B230FT)

Bottom right corner of alternator; there is a 8mm bolt w/ 13mm head that comes from the back of the alternator through a sliding bracket. The head of this 13mm bolt has a small threaded hole through which a long threaded rod runs back to another bracket. By turning this long threaded rod, the bolt that runs through the alternator is adjusted up/down to increase/decrease tension on the belt.

The bolt with the hold at the top (runs through the alternator) is the one that broke; snapped off because they over-torqued when replacing my alternator belt.

Can anyone help? The dealer has been NO help.

Cheers,

Justin Smith

The bolt at the top of the alternator (it serves as a hinge), is part number 968893 and called a Flange Screw. The nut for the flange screw is part number 948645. The tension adjusting assembly is part number 1378789, and individual parts are not available.

You must have a really lousy dealer parts department if I can find those part numbers using my computer. Sears should contact a dealer and get the part number, and buy the part.

Your best bet is the junk-yard. You have 2 near you:

    - Dave`s Ferncliff Auto Parts - Louisa, VA - 804-589-3642
    - Leon`s Auto Parts (self-serve) - Leon, VA - 540-547-2366

The 2nd one would be a better bet, since it seems to be a pick-n-pull style place.

      Noel,

Thanks for your help, though unfortunately, I'm no longer in Northern VA. In fact, I'm in the Augusta, GA area, and the local yards laugh when I ask if they have a Volvo.

Help w/ Alternator Part, Please! (long threaded adjustment screw, 1378789) 700 1990

I sympathize with the Sears guys, I've broken two of these adjustment screws in the last year. The first was just forgetting to loosen one of the bolts before I turned the adjustment screw, the second one was just fatigued and gave up the ghost while tightening. After the first one, I try to keep one or two on the shelf (courtsey of my local salvage yard) in case I accidentally break one. If I currently have a spare (and can find it), it's yours if you want me to mail it.

        God bless,
        Fitz Fitzgerald.

          Hi Fitz,

From what I understand of the original post, it was not the adjustment-screw that broke - but the stud with the threaded-hole that the screw passes through. Or maybe I read it wrong...

Oops. I understand now. I was reading the original post quite fast, and it looks like he mis-spelled the word hole (with hold instead). -thus my confusion. I probably have the bolt with the threaded hole too.

            Thanks for the heads up.
