clutch adjustment 200 1991

I ha a 91 240 with a slipping cluth, I just went to adjust it. When I try to grab onto the nylon nut i can only get it to move a smidge in each direction, then the channel locks only slip on it. I just sprayed it with WD-40 hoping to un seize it. is there a better way to go about this?

The cable adjuster sorta has a shape that is suppose to let you use a 19mm wrench (I think, not sure) to tighten or loosen it.

However, in my experience, the plastic isn't really strong enough to let the 19mm wrench take a good hold of it. So I usually just end up using an adjustable wrench, or a pair of vice grips.

As for free play, I check that at the pedal inside the car. About an inch or so of play is good. Don't want to tighten it too much because that can put undue stress on the pilot barring, which leads to premature clutch wear. (This is the same reason you shouldn't rest your foot on the clutch if you aren't shifting.)

    Good luck!

And remember... you can never have too many vice grips.

There should be two nylon nuts. One on either side of where the cable comes out of its' casing. One you can use and adjustable on - that's the one in the front that does the adjusting. The other one, in the rear, you'd have to use channel locks on - it has a funny shape and that's the one that locks and unlocks the other one. The funny one only moves a notch or two to unlock the other.
    It's a funny set up.

I have a 1990 and there is no lock, only the one large nylon adjusting nut that threads around the clutch cable. It "locks" in place from the friction of the cable and the big rubber washer. Shoot some penetrating lube along the clutch cable near the adjuster and try it again after a day or two. It's a real pain to free it up if it hasn't been adjusted in a long time.

there's only one you can fit an adjustable cresent on - that's the one that you turn to adjust the clutch. the one on the other side of the bracket - a funny shaped thing you'd have to use either vice grips or channel locks on - is the lock which holds the adjustment in place. i think you're supposed to be able to "unlock" the funny shaped one by hand. but i couldn't.
