If the trans/OD is already out of the car you can do this: First locate the brake ring. The brake ring, if you don't already know, is about 1/3 of the way back from the front of the OD unit itself, is about 3/8"-1/2" thick and is darker colored than the OD case. Go have a look at this pic.

The brake ring is the dark band just before the case becomes funnel shaped.
Spin the output shaft in the direction that it would turn when the car is in reverse and hit the outside of the brake ring with a soft hammer. It's probably easier to have someone else do the spinning while you concentrate on the hitting. Hit all around the circumference, not just in one place. If you don't have a rubber mallet of some kind you can use a block of wood against the ring and smack it with a metal hammer or just about anything heavy enough to deliver a solid blow. Keep spinning the shaft and hitting the brake ring. Pull back on the OD unit while all this is going on. Eventually it should release.
I used this method about a year ago without help and it wasn't too difficult. When I got to the point where there was about 3/4" of separation but still wouldn't come off I pushed it forward and pulled it back a few times, but gently, and it finally came off.

If that didn't work I don't know what else to tell you. But as I understand it you should be turning the shaft and hitting the brake ring at the same time.
Hung it from the final drive? I don't know why that wouldn't work but I performed this procedure with the tranny on the floor and it only took a few minutes. Maybe it needs to be horizontal for some reason.

The answer is in the 700/900 FAQ. Put the rear axle on jackstands, start the engine, shift into OD, and let the engine coast to a stop with the driveline engaged.

Or, put the transmission into reverse, set the parking brake, and firmly stall the engine out with the clutch.

Either method will unload the splines in the OD, and it will slip off easily.
