help with 164 E 140-160 1974

I just bought a '74 164 E and i promptly jumped the thing, got all 4 wheels off the ground and i bent something, as well as made the Gas tank leak. does anyone have a 160 series parts car or car for cheap they would be interested in selling next spring in the general area of Kalispell, Montana (northwest montana)? also, does the spindle peice between the upper and lower A-frames match one from a 140 series(thats what i bent...i think)? that would help.

comments and suggustions on the subject of reparing and restoring this car to working condition welcome.

thanks
ben

help with 164 E 140-160 1974

Ben,

I happen to have a '75 164e of which I am not going to be using very much. However, I am in eastern South Dakota. Here's the good news - my son lives in Billings and we visit him from time to time. I could be induced to perhaps tow the car to Billings, but it would have to be picked up the day I got there. The car is a "flintstone" special, i.e. the floor boards are shot, but it did run (knocked). I am taking some of the under the hood bits, including the electronic ignition. This probably is not going to happen until sometime next spring, but that is up to you... Let me know off the Board

I'd guess that an early 240 gas tank would fit a 74 164 in a pinch.
It may not, but with a hammer I wouldn't be surprised. The front
suspension bits are specific to the 164 but I udnerstand you can
replace the whole kit with a 140's front suspension -- swapping the
crossmember may be the way to go here depending on how much stuff
you broke. If you got all 4 wheels off the ground, maybe the motor
mounts are broken from the landing. The rear suspension has some
stuff (springs, mostly) that can exchange from 240 to 140.

I'd actually be surprised if you really broke more than tie rods
or ball joints, besides the now leaking gas tank that is. The
tie rods / ball joints probably needed to be replaced anyhow.

Have fun with your new brick, but not quite that much fun...
chris

Being a 74 164, my guess is a 74 144 gas tank should fit. Not so sure about pre 74 as the mounting location is different. If it is a 75, then a 244 should fit without much problems as the rear end of the 75 164 is basically a 240.

First thing I wanna hear is just what the heck you were doing... :-)

Not sure about teh parts compatability twixt 164 or 140 series, and I expect that the NW part of Montana ain't the best place to find Volvo bits... Hopefully someone will be able to help you more.

Good luck with it!
