grey wiring box on firewall 200

could someone please tell me what this thing does? [see image link]
i noticed that all of the wires coming out of it are rotting. i cut the outer sheath off to see the extent of the damage to the bundle and all the wires' coatings are crumbling off all the way down. i tried to wrap them individually, but i can't get to them all the way down. what will this do? do i need to worry about it? thanks

"and all the wires' coatings are crumbling off all the way down. i tried to wrap them individually,"
How competent are you at cutting wire and attaching connectors? A lot of people go for a replacement harness. But if you put aside a couple of hours to replace the wires individually, the job goes easily.

If you can't find teflon polytube, use the small diameter vinyl tubing found in hardware stores used for water. It is oil and heat resistant.

You need a replacement harness from any 85 (non-turbo) 240 through 87. In fact I'm prety sure an 88 240 harness will work (I've laid them out side by side to compare), but has one extra connector near the ECU which will be unused in your application. It is entirely possible to do without moving the manifold although on a first run, I am not sure which way is easier.

The worst case scenario is an engine fire starting from the big red wire connecting the alternator to the starter (and thence to the battery) -- since it's always "hot," if the insulation on that one crumbles, it could be a real problem. That's part of the same wire harness. I just did this last weekend, and was a real chore, but not mechanically challenging. I will need to do this on my '81 which will require removing the intake manifold, but on the '83 (probably similar to yours), it was difficult but not impossible with the manifold in place. (Haven't looked closely, but the red wire, unlike others, was apparently okay.)

Dave Barton (http://www.linkline.com/personal/dbarton/WireHarnesses.html) provides an incredible service finding good replacement harnesses from boneyards and making them available -- highly recommended!

Yes it is possible that it could effect some of the dash components and you do need to repair or replace it.. As for how hard is it to do.. well it is a job. I would be very careful in replacing it with a harness from the junk yard.. Make sure it is the exact one for your year and model, the junk people will tell you that a lot fo them work, which some do , but stick with what the people on this board advise you on... A later model harness will interchange in most applications but some reconfiguring might be needed.. If you have basic common sense you should have no problem.. Just mark everything and replace one section at a time so you do not get overloaded with wires hanging out everywhere.. If you need help just ask..Max

That is the engine wiring harness connection. From the way you describe it you need to worry or at least be more than a little concerned. Lot's of screwy electrical problems can crop up due to the crumbling insulation. Volvo did upgrade the part and the only real cure is to buy the later wiring harness for your model (expensive but good used ones can be had) or make one yourself.

thanks for the quick response. is it possible that the speedo sensor and/or dash unit could be affected by this? also, how difficult is the installation the replacement harness? i do regular maintenance, but nothing too technical as i don't have the tools. thanks, shawn

'86 is newer than I have owned but, no, it shouldn't affect the speedo sensor. But it can cause the idiot lights in the instrument cluster to all display when the engine is running. It can cause certain gauges to read incorrectly. It can cause the engine to keep running with the ignition off and key out. You get the idea.
How difficult it is depends on how you go about it. Most people here will tell you to remove the intake manifold. After having replaced the harness on my car without doing that I tend to agree with them although my old car has fewer harness connections under the hood so it wasn't all that bad.
There is a description of replacing the harness in the 700/900 FAQ much of which applies to the 200 models. It can give you an idea of what you're in for. If it looks like too much you'll have to get some help or have someone else do it. The latter option could get pricey.

That's the electrical connector that connects the engine wire harness to the body wire harness.
It has a alt wire, starter wire and the temp sensor wire. some others I'm sure.
