Calling uniberp....... 140-160

Hello there,
I got your responce to my inquiry about the T5 tranny swap and have looked for your thread on the conversion. However, I haven't had any luck finding it. Can you help with my search?

Different question---
Did early and late 140's have different width tunnels? If so what was the model year for the change and was it specific to 2-door, 4-door, or wagons, auto's or sticks? I ask because I need to determine if teh T5 will fit under my car which is a 1971 145.

Thanks,
Wayne

    Most of it's here:
    http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/index.htm?id=675105 ---- AUgust 2003

Ignore the speedo instructions. Those didn't work at all. Use a (cheap $18) mustang cable and pickup (not so cheap, but it should be in the tranny as purchased), and mate the Volvo speedo end of a cable onto it.

I don't know about tunnels. I doubt width is much different, but the height may be a factor, since the t5 shifter base comes right up next to the hole in the 73-74 hump.

The '67-68 140 tunnels are smaller than '69- tunnels. The early one takes a 6" round center bearing rubber hangar and the later one 8" one with spring.
You should be OK for the '71, but a '68 cannot accept the bigger drive shaft and 2" centerbearing due to this, although the transmission should physically fit, at least a 240 M46 can fit if you use the early driveshaft/hangar.

      Great, thanks for the link.

Does the "new" mustang tranny spin my crazy old "ribbon" style spedo at close to the right speed? I have seen lots of talk about using different spedo grears in the tranny and am wondering what to prepare myself for. I will eventually go to 17"wheels too as that would make a difference in accuracy. Any ideas on this.

Where are you located? Any chance I could see your completed swap? I am in Vancouver, Wa.

A large variety of inexpensive speedo gears can be fitted to the speedo pickup, from ~14 to 24 tooth. I'd just get the cable installed and see what your error is, then compensate with a different gear.
Stop by Napa and ask to look at a mustang speedo cable and see if that might be fitted.
I'm across the country in suburban Chicago. Last 145 in the rust belt. Orange at that.

Wait until all installed until you measure for your driveshaft. Fit the mustang slip-yoke in nearly as far as you can and measure the overall length to have it made up to size. Mine is about 1.5 inches shorter than it should be and I think I get a little vibe on startup because of that. Watch the vert and hoz alignment of the driveshaft. Make the front section as straight as possible to the output shaft, although how is just an eyeballl guess, I guess.

John at Vintage preformance recomended that a 1 piece drive line be fabricated to replace teh original 2 piece. I am not sure his reason for this however.

          Thoughts???

If I were you I would find a driveshaft from a 164 with a M410 OD trans. The most solid driveline that Volvo made for a manual rwd, except the later 245's with M47 which have the flex coupling and is 3" diameter split shaft. Unfortunately that 245 front 1/2 is too long, but you can use the rear 1/2 and cut down the front. That flex coupling is the real deal to transfer torque.

He builds 200hp b20 engines and drives them 140+mph, gets 6 MPG.
            That might be the reason.

A longer driveshaft will increase unsprung weight, and may increase radial loading on the diff pinion bearing (probably insignificant). The Mustangs have 1-piece driveshafts, about 3 inches diameter.

Actually, if the situation is the same as swapping in a T5 into a 240turbo, the one piece is quite a bit lighter than the two peice. That's why my friend Tony put a one piece on his T5 swap...

I meant unsprung weight, which is the part that moves with the suspension, and includes approximately one half of the weight of the rear half. Insignificant difference, in this case.
