replacement engine questions, third seat needed 200

I'm finally getting my 240 (1990, 222000) back on the road with a replacement engine. I've arranged to get one from a bone yard, and they gave me a good price on putting it in. Should I ask to see the serial number on the engine to see if it matches the serial on the car it came from to make sure I'm buying an engine with the stated number of miles? They say it has 89,000, but I'd like some sort of proof.

Are there other things to watch out for when making an engine switch at a boneyard? They seem honest enough. I purchased all the gaskets and seals from fcp groton, along with a timing belt which I'll ask them to put on the new engine before installing it.

thanks in advance for your suggestions.

If they are charging a decent price and putting it in the car themselves, ask for a warranty - say for 30 days or 1000mi. If they don't go for that, I'd be suspicious of the engine. If the engine really has low mileage it should be rock solid, and, as it's going into a high-mileage Volvo, should have a relatively easy life.

(If this was an LS-1 going into a kit car, I wouldn't blame the yard for 'no warranty', but...)

Who cares about milage, what you really want to know is whether the engine had regular oil changes. The easy way to do that is to look under the oil fill cap and see how much varnish, discoloration, and sludge is built up. Some varnish is expected but any crusty stuff or excess sludge is bad news. While the engine is out of the car, you could also take off the oil pan and have a look. It's not a bad idea to have a fresh gasket on the oil pan anyway, and when the engine is out of the car, that's the time to do it.
