off topic, but i suspect the expertise is here... 1800

...how hard would it be to lift the 5 speed manual transmission out of an '88 740 wagon and stuff it in a '90 740 wagon after removing the auto trans in the '90?
...
my '88 740 was rear ended and totaled due to repair price (got $1200.00 for it from the othwer guy's ins co.)...still runs fine with almost 250k mi on it. but the tailgate is stuck and the left rear door is stuck also. i like rwd volvo wagons but hate auto tranies. so i want to keep my old transmixer and put it in the newer wagon. would appreciate any ideas.
thx
flaps (i do have an 1800)

The transfer is pretty sttraight forward. Lot of work, but you'll be happy with when it's done.
Just take everything from the flywheel back and put it into the automatic 740 including the driveshaft and rear axle/differential. They are two very different ratios and the 5-speed on the auto rear end will not be a very good combo. The only thing to consider would be if the '88 M47 has a speedometer gear which may need to be plugged up, and the flywheel has the pick-up for the timing sensor, which it may not, as IIRC the sensor is on '89 and later ones.

...from. apparently if my '88 manual wagon was a year newer, it would be okay. do you know if there is a 'workaround' for this?
thx

There are bellhousings with and without the spot for the sensor. I guess you could tinker a bit yourself on one without it to fit it on. You could also look for a used one with the sensor hole cut into it.

@ flaps:
The '84 and '85 M47's have the mechnical speedo, so there wont be a problem with that. So it's pretty much a bolt on.

@vvpete:
Do you know what the rear end ratios of both AW71 and M47 are? Is the AW71 perhaps a 4.1 diff and the M47 a 3.9 or so? Or the perhaps the other way around?
And is the rearend ratio of an AW71 equiped 740, the same as an AW71 equiped 240? Thanks.

Cheers, ben

I believe the rear of the auto on both the 740 and 240 with AW71 is 2.68:1.
The rear of the M47 is 3.34:1.
As far as I know the only 4.11:1 rear was a few '78GT's and early GLT's.
Should be easy to verify by looking at the stamped plate on the right rear of the diff.
