Wagon, rear back seat headrest inquiry 700

Hello all,

Does anyone know if the mechanism for the headrest are standard in the internal making of the rear back seat?

I ask because my daughter is tall enough so that a headrest is important. I can not seem to find the checkered black/white back seats with headrest at any junk yard. If the internal parts are there then I can just cut into the seat and insert the post and trim cover, etc.

Best Regards,
Anastasia

Do your seat backs have a receiver hole for the head rests?
I have two rear seat head rests (black and white checkered) that are in excellent condition. I also have the seat backs with the receiver holes but shipping could be problem depending on where you live.

Wagon, rear back seat headrest inquiry 700 1986

Hello Anastasialk,
My UK 1986 740 GLE estate has rear headrests. When I bought the car they were not fitted so managed to get some to match the seats from a scrapyard cheaply and simply slotted them into the existing holes in the seat backrest. Have a look on the top of your rear seat backrest for 2 metal holes, that is where they slot into. No rear headrest for centre seat only outer seats. It was a simple two minute job to fit them as everything was there already. I thought it was odd that they were not there and then thought someone had probably lost them when lowering the seats and never re-fitted them.
Good luck James.

Hello James,

Hope this finds you well.

Ok, I understand that if the holes are there it is easy to put in the new headrest. What I am wondering is... my car does not have the holes, at least not visibly. When I was inspecting a rear wagon back seat at the junkyard it seemed possible that the components inside the seat may be in all wagons rear back seats. It seemed to me that if I cut out the appropriate spot on the back of the top cushion that maybe there is a metal plate that can be punched out that will allow access for the post holder to the headrest. I assume they may have done this so they only have to produce one seat in mass production and custom it after. I could be wrong...

I looked for info everywhere but still haven't found out if I should even try.

Best Regards,

Anastasia

Hello Anastasialk,
Yes maybee all of the seats have the headrest option, but I dont know. Mine has plastic surrounds around the holes for the headrest in the same interior colour. Maybee you could find a rear backrest that has had its day in the scrapyard ie ripped worn etc and cut into it to see if it has got the holes for the headrest, at least that way you would know if it does before you cut into you own car seats. Also phone the volvo dealer and ask them if they would of had rear headrests and if not how do you fit them.
Best Wishes James.

Oh yeah, beleive it or not the Volvo's in all the local junkyards around here all have headrest! Strange ....I am going to keep my eye's open in hopes of finding one without one so that I can take a look inside. That is a good idea to phone the Volvo dealer, thank you for the advice. I don't often turn to them because most of them don't care much about the older models around here. There is a great one in NH so maybe I will just phone them... they have been very helpful in the past.

Hope you have a great weekend.

Best Regards,

Anastasia

I was under the impression that all of the wagons had rear headrests and mechanisms, though I could be wrong since I have only personally owned sedans. You could always pull the headrests from a sedan and make a mount for them in the wagon but I bet that if you keep looking, you will eventually find the parts that you are looking for.
