Master brake cylinder replacement options 140-160

Any suggestions of later model Volvo master brake cylinders that might fit my 144? I can get a good cylinder off a 940 for virtually nothing. Just wondering what you guys have already done in this line.

The reason for replacement is because the service kit for mine is around $65 from the only supplier I could find. It's the Lockheed cylinder where the kit includes one piston with a rubber pre-fitted (you can't fit it yourself). And I have to import the kit to this Island I'm living on... The cylinder is also getting pitted. Fortunately it is where there is no travel. But it will grow. So I'd rather replace it with something that's more common.

Thanks.

PS: Please do not suggest anything off a 1975 240. Very hard to find where I am. After 1980 is fine.

I am not sure how well your mechanics modifies things to get them to work, but I have known of people who used 240 brake parts (master cylinder, booster) to fit into the 140. You might want to check that out since 240's are readily available in NZ. By the way, how close are you to Wellington?

Auckland up North, the only city in the country. Just kidding, but Auckland does have 1/4 of the population.

What mechanic? I'm an electronic engineer and my wife is a mechanical engineer. At work I can fabricate what I want, it's just that I don't like getting dirty. I was my hands a 1000 times a day...

Not sure if you know NZ, but here we have a 6-monthly inspection to see if cars are road worthy. Mods to the chasis need be certified and there my be no structural rust, so most likely mods to the brakes would also need certification. But if I use Volvo parts it should be fine. I've fitted retracting safety belts myself without them knowing it. If anyone is wondering, all the mounting points are already there, just covered in masking tape under the paint. Belts off a 240 fit, and I got ones from early 80's. The 240 center buckle mount did not fit on my 144, but I found that the front belts would clip into the rear clips of a 740 that a friend was stripping with very minor milling of the belt buckle. It just would not latch because the buckle did not go in far enough, and milling the center slot about 2mm deeper did the job.

There you go Niel, instead of fabricating seatbelts, maybe a brake master cylinder and booster this time? lol! or maybe a "brake by wire " system? The reason why I was asking about Wellington is because I have a relative who lives there.
As time goes by, you will find out that many parts from the 244 with little or no modification and some creative thinking, can be made to fit into the 144. The 144 is a rather versatile car. Mine is a 74 model, so many things from an early 244 (door handle, dashboard, console box, most switches, trimmings, door handles...and the list goes on) are a direct fit on the 144. Don't forget all the door glass and windshield too. As a matter of fact, parts from OTHER makes can sometimes be used in the 144. My alternator is a 65 amp unit straight out of a Mitsubishi Galant, bolted directly into my 144 with no modification. My electric fan, mounted in front of the car on the A/C condensor is from a 88 Honda Accord. THere's this one guy in Malaysia who has a Volvo that looks like yours, but has an internal of a 75 244 (dash, seats, etc)
Gotta love that inspection. We have it once in 3 years in Malaysia. My 144 passes everytime, even the smog test! In Oklahoma, where I am at right now, there is no vehicle inspection. And even when they did, all they checked for was basically the lights, wipers, smog test..and that was it.
Let us know if you succeed in getting a 244 master cylinder to work in your car.

I was hoping someone had an answer to save me the time figuring out how to adapt something that will not look home made (for the inspections). Time is money, especially if you do not have much extra time available. Which reminds me that I should go and build that safety rail for the porch (or deck or "stoep" or what ever you want to call it).

I've got a 1971, so not sure the later dash will fit, but I actually like the old dash. It has no cracks or marks, not even a radio fitted ever. I drive 300km (190mi) per month, so a radio is not a high priority. Rather preserving the old beast and sourcing parts in advance for repairs (like the MC).

By the way, it's a 3 3/16 inch spacing horizontal flange on the MC, mounted on the left side of the fire wall of a right hand drive. So there is no steering shaft/box in the way, and it would be easy to fit an MC with ports on the other side. Just have to find one.

          Have fun...

Don't know where you are but I got one from a guy who sold one on ebay
(he happened to have another one). It is rebuilt and was $40 plus shipping.
I had ordered one from my local parts house here in Bartlesville but it was
the one with 2¼" bolt spacing and a snout sticking out and I needed the one
with 3¼" spacing and no snout. (I already had the other one as a spare for
my 164.) My local parts guy said the one with 2¼" spacing was the only one
he could get. My price on that one (had I taken it)would have been $33.

I think you could use a later one but it would have to be re-plumbed. The
outlets are different and generally on the wrong side.

    What island are you on?

I'm in New Zealand, South East of Australia. The country that was too small to be included in the globe at Universal Studios. It's is made up of 2 islands in the shape of an Italian boot (shoe). The population is 4 million people and 60 million sheep.

Volvo came to NZ only with the 240 series, and with the cheap Japanese imports we get, cars are extremely cheap and old ones are not kept for spares.

Most people on e-Bay do not ship international or do it only via expensive UPS. I'll get the correct part number when it stops raining, and will be so glad if one of you friendly foke offer to help me out getting a cylinder or the name of a company that will ship it cheaply. I'm limited to searching the internet, but most shops are not on-line.

      Thanks...

So since 1972 the human population has doubled but the sheep population
has remained the same?? Maybe harvesting too much of the mob.....

We had a Kiwi living with us in Panama from 1972 to 1974. Traveled there
by bicycle from Tierra del Fuego and became a Christian shortly after his
arrival in Panama. He's now a Baptist missionary in England.

We eventually got to where we could understand him well enough that we
could interpret his speech for other gringos not so fortunate as we.
Now when he goes to KiwiLand they tell him HE sounds like a Gringo but
he sounds more Anguish (English) to me.

I'm actually a South African and moved here only 4 years ago. Kiwis speak a very flat English as opposed to South African English which is more like having a hot potato in your mouth. And my first language is English, which does not help (I did have English as a second language throughout my schooling). Today I spoke of an avocado pear, which is the direct translation for avocado from Afrikaans. Then there was yesterday when one of the IT guys at work almost hit me when I asked for a stiffy. In SA we speak of a 3.5" stiffy and a 5.25" floppy, refering to the one being soft and the other hard. Here in NZ apparently they are all floppies. Apparently in the 80's the sheep population reached 80 million! Four years ago it was about 45 million.

There are a lot of Volvo enthusiasts in Austrailia next to you. Contact the Volvo clubs over there and grab any 240 master+booster to match and it should fit the 140.

Oh I also have a brand new in-box ATE master cylinder that is meant to fit the early Wagner master cyl on a '67-68 140. I would sell it, but don't think it will fit your car without getting a matching booster, which are harder to find then the 240 ones. In fact, it will only fit a few 140's, 1800's or 122S from that era.

If I were you I would replace the brake booster and master cyl together. It is the mount to the booster that is the limiting factor. I believe any fro '69 on would fit.

You might try RPR in the states for parts. I don't know if they ship to NZ but they might. You can find there web site through Google or VClassics. If what you need is not listed send them an e-mail
