Changing tank pump using IPD kit / should I replace main pump ? 200 1982

As per dealers recommendations I am changing my tank pump (Myself) using the IPD 740 modification kit. Is it also a good Idea to change the main pump as they said it was being starved for feul. They did not specifically recomend changing the main pump. What has been peoples experience with the IPD 740 pump kit, good or bad ?

I put the 740 prepump in my '82 245Ti a few years ago. Didn't change the main pump and haven't had any problems with it since. I was into the tank six times trying to get the main pump quiet with new prepumps, used prepumps and my original prepump. The 740T one did the trick.

My '81 DL wagon has a really noisy in-tank pump. Are they notoriously noisy? I can live with it--just turn up the radio--but my passengers are always expecting the warp drive to kick in.....they'll just have to keep waiting....

I suppose I'll have to replace a pump eventually (285K on the thing) and it'll be good to know to get the 740T kit.

Was there a problem? You could verify the tank pump is good or bad by testing.
Just remove the line going into the main pump, insert into container and energize just the tank pump.

I had the car checked by Volvo & they said it needed a new tank pump. They wanted about $350 so I said F*<( that & bought the IPD 740 pump kit for $115. I have the Bunghole tool & changed it before a few years ago.

I just changed mine with the same kit. One bit of info that I found very helpful was that there is one line that looks like it is heat shrunk onto the outlet pipe from the tank. the way to deal with this is to unscrew this line at its junction about 12 inches down the line. The other two lines come off easily. If your main pump works then leave it. The funny noises that mine was making went away with the new pump. I also found that you could probably hammer off the bung nut without the bung tool but you'd have a really hard time getting it back on especially if you're changing the O-ring. I'd let you have mine but it has been sent off already to another in-tank fixer guy.
