94 940T cranking time -FPR? 900

Hi all-

My 94 940T takes 3 to 6 seconds or more to fire, most of the time. Sometimes, if it has been runing it will fire quickly.

I have changed the fuel filter and the fuel check valve. I have removed and cleaned the throttle body. Today I removed and cleaned the fuel injectors. The car runs great now, but is still a slow start.

What is next? The fuel pressure regulator?

Today when I removed the fuel line to remove the injectors, there was almost no pressure remaining in the line, even though I had pulled the car up in the driveway a few minutes before. So even with the check valve, it seems to lose pressure when stopped.

Thanks.

Dear Bruce,

Good a.m. and may this find you well. The crank/RPM sensor may be starting to fail. It is located on the transmission bell housing, just behind the engine, on the passenger side (US/Canadian car). It is secured with a single hex head machine screw.

This sensor detects flexplate / flywheel rotation. Its signal allows the fuel pump to keep running, after the 1-2 second-long start-up, that pressurizes the fuel system.

The crank sensor's failure can result from deteriorating wiring. As a result, its failure can results in ever-harder starts - and unexpected stalls - until the wiring fails, at which point the car will not run.

This part is not hard to replace - see the FAQs, under FEATURES, above - and is not expensive (under $50).

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

spook

If the return line on the fuel pressure regulator is disconnected just after the engine is shut off there should be no fuel coming out of the regulator if it is in good shape. If fuel is flowing the regulator is bad.
