dashboard lights 200 1987

Hi All,

My dashboards lights don't come on when I turn on
the headlights. Any idea what the diagnosis might
be? It's an '87 244 GL.

Thanks,

Tim

PS--I had the IPD VX camshaft installed last week
(along with a new water pump and timing belt) and
the car is acting as if it is on steroids--a good
thing!

Are just the dash lights out or are the lights in the center console out also? If all the lights are out, see below. If only the instrument lights are out, I'd suspect a poor connection to the instrument cluster. If there is no power to the cluster, the guages may not work as well. I'm assuming the fuse is good.

The instrument light dimmer control, upper left dash, has been known to go bad. You can pull the control out with the wire still connected and measure input and output voltage. Some posters recommend bridging across the control to get a little brighter dash lighting.

I'm interested in your results with the VX cam. Did you change the advance on the cam at all? Does your car have manual or automatic? My 945 would be nearly perfect with just a bit more passing power at about 2500 to 3500 rpm.

Hello,

I'll have to double check about your question
regarding dash vs. center console lights. And I'll
resubmit.

Regarding the VX cam, I didn't change the advance.
I just had my mechanic drop it in, and make sure
to check valve clearances (no adjustments needed).
The car is an automatic, and I do a lot of highway
driving in Queens and Long Island. What I've noticed
is that the car has much smoother and much stronger
acceleration, both when I am merging onto the
expressway, and when I am passing. The engine response
is much, much quicker and nimbler. It feels like a different car.
My next upgrade will be the sport exhaust.

I recommend it.

Thanks for your reply. I'm considering it.
