Emergency Brake Cable Replacement 900 1996

Can anyone offer me advice on replacing the emergency brake cable on my 1996 960? I have successfully replaced the emergency brake shoes and short cable at the rear wheels, but I can't figure out how to pull through the new main cable from the center console emergency brake lever to the rear end where the short cable connects. (I am replacing both the cable and its housing as a unit.) Do the gas tank and drive shaft have to be dropped? (Please say no.) I have removed the center console and rear carpet and tried attaching the new cable to the end of the old one and pulling on the old one from under the rear of the car, but it hangs up somewhere above the gas tank. No amount of pulling and cursing seems to move it. Any tips would be appreciated.

Emergency Brake Cable Replacement 900 1996

I just did this myself a few months ago on my 95/960. The main cable is in a hanger just above the fuel tank at the rear of the tank, you should see it if you look. After making sure it is not on the hanger just tie a wire as I did and pull the cable out from under the rear of the car, next attach the new cable to the wire and tape up the end so not to get caught up on any thing on its way back as you pull it back from inside the car. I made the mistake of pulling it out before attaching the wire, that was a 4 hour mistake I had to use a electrical snake
    good luck

Have you tried swearing alot? That seems to be a requirement. I had a pal help me and it wal still a pain. I did not, however take the center console apart, I simply reached down under the p-brake handle. It was/is helpful to make certain you've adjusted the cable so as to have lot of slack. I had to adjust it all the way back and readjust after installation. Watch for a hang-up going into the "tunnel" leading to the console area so as not to damage the rubber boot.
