Need a reverse detent pull rod for M46 tranny 200

I tried posting this to ALL but got no results so I'll try again here on just the 200 forum.

My son has a manual, M46, transmission in his '86 240. Today the "reverse detent pull rod" inside the shift lever broke. This rod is the newer type with the square opening at the top which connects to the detent ring that you pull up on to allow shifting to reverse. I haven't seen it but he says it looks like plastic.

My question is where can one find a replacement? Any sources out there?

Reverse Detent Rod Repair (with photos) 200 1985

The part offered by the Ebay seller appears to be produced by a 3D printer. What a great piece of technology.

Had the same part break on our 1985 244 a year ago. Of course, this happened just as we were attempting to back out of a narrow, dead end road! I was able to put it in reverse by lifting the shift lever boot and pulling up on the white plastic piece that engages the detent. Now I’ve got that trick in my bag for the next time this happens. After all, that plastic in our cars ain’t getting any more flexible with time.

Anyway, I needed to get the car back into service quickly so here’s the repair I made:

(above) Broken reverse detent pull rod repair with wire

(above part #15)It appears the pull rod was made of metal for the 1984 & earlier models

Some parts should JUST NOT be made of plastic

Need a reverse detent pull rod for M46 tranny 200

Jim, I have the exct same problem with my 1988, 740. If you find out where to get one please post the info. By the way, the bar is plastic and it's the very top of the square opening that is broken.

No longer available from Volvo for some stupid reason.

However, someone on Turbobricks posted this ebay ad.

Good luck.

I think you'll find the dealer is your only source. They're cheap, Something like $3, if memory serves.

Thanks, we'll give it a try. The parts department at our local Volvo dealer has really gone downhill the last few years. Service has been terrible!

The service and parts department at my Volvo dealer is great - if it concerns my XC60. As for the 32-yr-old 240, I get a sympathetic shake of the head most times.
