89 245 no start 200 1989

I turn on the ignition switch and there's nothing. Here's what I've done:

1) fuel pump is getting 12 volts and buzzes

2) neutral safety switch (AW70) clicks when fed with current (ignition switch turned to 'start') while manually moved across its positions

3) 35 amp system fuse is intact

4) this car's battery will start my '87; the '87's battery doesn't start this '89.

I drove through some deep water yesterday during the hurricane's remnants rain and got home with no problem. However, might I have killed the starter somehow? I was inclined to swap in the extra starter/solenoid assembly from my departed '83, but I see the '89 takes a different starter model number. So, I'm feeling at a dead end. Any ideas what I'm missing?

Thanks in advance!

Your 89 will take an 83 starter. My 89 has on older type Bosch starter in place of the cheesy Hitachi starter it came with. You should check the wire connections to the starter. In a pinch I usually eliminate the ignition switch/interlocks by jumpering a wire from the starter to the battery. If the starter works when you do this you have a problem in the wire from the ignition switch.

      Thanks, Jessie! 200 1989

Turns out it was the starter. I jumpered between the (+) post on the battery and the insulated male spade connector on the solenoid, with no response. So I pulled the starter and put in the '83's starter. It started up just fine. Gees, I had no idea how chintzy the 'newer starters' are. I'm glad I kept that '83's starter. Now I'll have to dig up another spare.

      Thanks again for your help!
