help!! automatic transmission won't shift 200 1990

I've got a 1990 240 with an Automatic Transmission that has been absolutely wonderful until today. For whatever reason, when the car is put into drive, it will not shift out of first gear. Every once in a while, if I manually move the gear selector through 1, 2, and D, I feel it clunk into 3rd, but it still won't go into overdrive. I've replaced the fluids regularly, and the levels are fine. Also, it shifts into reverse with no problem... any ideas what this could be?
Thanks!

I second the motion to have a look at the kickdown cable that is attached to the spool that moves when you press the accelerator pedal. They are prone to binding up with age (aren't we all?). It should move freely in out when the spool is turned manually.

1. Check throttle and kickdown cables to see if they are either binding up or caught on something. My "90" had a similar problem. The tranny didn't want to upshift. My kickdown cable was loose and had caught on a nut near the throttle body. See 700/900 FAQ for adjustment procedures - piece of cake!

2. Is your shift linkage okay? Maybe an adjustment is needed here.

Post back with any questions...

Thanks! Problem solved- it was the kickdown cable. Now I can continue on to 200K...
