Front end hit...nothing serious (I hope) but questions 200

So on my way home from work this evening I had my first encounter with a front end accident. I was approaching a traffic light and the car infront of me stopped short due to the car infront of him and I didn't have enough distance to stop in time so I hit his back end with my front bumper (My fault traveling too close). Thankfully I was slowing down anyway but ended up hitting his trailer hitch to the left and to the bottom of my front license plate leaving a nice rectangular 1 inch in height x 2 inch width dent in the plastic bumper cover. It sounded much worse, but I inspected the front end and found zero damage aside from the dent. I don't know if the hit punctured the aluminium beam though. Nothing had popped, and car seems fine. I do with I had a picture of it. My questions are as follows: 1) I know the airbag system has some sensors near the front end so should I have the brick inspected? 2) Should I have the brick checked out for structural damage? Perhaps being overanxious but I'd say the impact was around 5 mph. My plan is to get a euro front plate and holder which will hopefully cover up some of the dent as the rest of the bumper is in perfect condition or unless I can score a cheap replacement.

Thanks as always,
Adam

Thanks guys... 200

I'll make sure to check out the engine and tranny mounts for damage. Drove fine this morning and no leaks or other new noises or problems just for a cosmetic blemish. I'm hoping to cover up the dent with a Euro front plate.

Best,
Adam

Do these cars have five mph bumpers? If so, woudln't that make it somewhat protected?

Check the engine mounts and transmission mount for damage. They often break in collisions.

Sorry to hear of your problem. I'm a bit of a nut when it comes to following closely, so I'm glad to hear you'll not be following as closely as you were earlier.
I don't know much about airbags and their sensors, but I believe the sensors are under the drivers' seat. If it didn't deploy, you probably didn't hit hard enough, which is a good thing. I hit a deer last year in my 940 at about 40 MPH and thankfully no airbag deployment.
A damaged bumper is no fun, but if it were me, I'd dispense with taking it to check on further damage. Unless you really know the shop, you could be paying a bunch for work you don't really need.
Good luck,
Mark
