245 in tank fuel pump access question............ 200 1993

Hi!...just getting ready to check a few things on this new to me 245, and was wondering about the fuel pump access.....when i fold down the rear seat, there's a row of screws holding down the cargo area floor panel, is it just a matter of taking out the screws and folding the floor panel back.?...
TIA........j.

Thanks to Bruce Young (lucid) for supplying the information on the easiest way to check the two pumps for function:

To run the pumps individually,

1) Remove the prepump fuse (#4 or #5 depending on car/year)
2) Put 12V to left fuse contact (input side) to run Main pump
3) Put 12V to right fuse contact (output side) to tun Tank pump

4) To run both pumps (i.e., to try starting), just leave the prepump fuse installed.

For convenience, use any of the 6 thru 10 fuses as a voltage source for jumering, as they are always "hot". For some reason, the "conventional wisdom" usually pairs up 4 with 6, or 5 with 7 when jumping fuses. But 4-7 or 5-6 would be just as valid. I always pick the voltage from the fuse Input side (Left contact), so the fuse at that location (6, 7, 8, 9, or 10) is not a concern.

This procedure puts voltage exactly where the Fuel relay does (or should).

There are 5 screws the hold down the rear floor. Remove those to remove the floor.
Then remove the access cover and wiring harnesses.
Use some PBlaster on the lock ring. You might need a hammer and a drift to know it loose. Be careful with the float arm when you remove. Also, inspect the o-ring, and be careful not to drop it in.

If you are just trying to check the fuel pump for operation, just start the car, remove the fuel filler cap, and listen for the telling buzz of the pump from the neck of the filler tube.

Good Luck.

Tom

That should do it, as I recall. Do you have the Bentley manual or similar? You might also want to check www.geocities.com/magicbus1974/volvo/tank2.htm -- good pictures of the parts involved.
