1987 240DL wagon PLEASE HELP! 200 1987

My 87 240DL shut down at a traffic light. Turns over but won't start. There is power to the ignition coil, but I only get one spark to the distributer each time the ignition is turned. I thought I was supposed to get pulses instead of just one spark. I have read about similar problems posted here but they all said that they have spark to the distributer. I do not know if I can say that because I was under the impression that the spark was supposed to be continous but I only get one spark. I replaced the ignition coil but still the same problem. Could it be the timing? I just hope that it is not the ECU. Please help. My only car and I hate walking, except if it's on a trail.

"...but I only get one spark to the distributer each time the ignition is turned. "

Do you get this one spark as soon as the key is turned to "On"?
Or when the Key is turned farther, to crank the engine?

If it's before cranking, you may have a broken timing belt, and the coil is firing (once) because the distributor (not turning) has stopped in just the right position.

As a quick check of the belt, remove the oil cap and watch to see if the camshaft turns while someone cranks it over.

Another T-belt clue would be if it seems to be cranking over faster than usual, which could be due to some valves being open and reducing compression.

Since you're only getting one spark per attempted start, see if the timing belt broke. The easiest way is to remove the oil fill cap and watch the cam shaft to see if it turns while someone cranks the starter. Or you could remove the distributor cap and see if the rotor turns. It sounds like a spark issue but it doesn't take long to verify gas flow to the injector rail by disconnecting the fuel hose from the rail and cranking it over with the open end of the hose is jar. If the timing belt and fuel flow are ok, I'd start suspecting the Hall Effect pickup inside the distributor.jp

The first two things to check are the ignition fuse and the connection at the battery for corrosion. Then the fuel pump relay, both are common problems.

Don't worry about ECUs. Yours would be one of the few 544's to go bad if it did, there are tons of them around for $25-50. I do not think you whould suspect the ECU, but even if you do need one it is a cheap part.

    Hello,

There's a white fuse holder in behind your battery. See if you can jiggle around the fuse, or pop it out and clean it up. It's the main EFI fuse, and very common for a connection to fail there.
