Here's what I've done to this beast ('89 245) since I bought it a few weeks ago:
new battery
new alternator brushes
new starter
new AMM
new flame trap
"new" fuel pressure regulator
"new" fuel pump relay
cleaned TB


Now the thing barely starts and won't idle. It seems to search for an idle while it warming up, but then just dies and won't restart, although it turns over fine.
If I had to guess about the time this all started it would have to be just after I cleaned the TB, but it's acting like its either starving of there's a vacume leak, which I checked for.
Please offer me some ideas before I either turn this beast over to a real mechanic, or junk it.

    You mentioned everything except checking the fuel injector seals. Spray a little starting fluid at the fuel injectors , on the outside; if the engine revs up, and especially if you hear a sucking sound, the injectors need new o-ring seals. My '78 244 was doing this, with hard starting and popping and very rough idle. Am re-seating the injectors and checking out the bladder/bellows below the intake manifold...

    Some other ideas. Throttle position sensor properly adjusted and plugged in,
    coolent temp sensor reading correctly at ECU, trashed intake manifold gasket, holes in air intake hose ( from AMM to the throttle body), bogus throttle body gasket, bad ( new) AMM, low fuel pressure at fuel rail ( clogged filter, weak/no in tank pump, etc). Good luck!

    Vacum leak??? The motor could be running too lean, making it hunt at idle if it starts. With all you have replaced, I would start looking at vacum hoses.

      Based on the evidence (it started "just after I cleaned the TB") that's what it sure sounds like to me.

      In addition to what Doug advised you might want to check the operation of your Idle Control Valve and clean out any oily deposits.
