B18 Alternator Bracket 140-160

Hi--
I have a 68 142S that's been converted to alternator about 7 years ago. I think it was an autolite alternator. The bracket for the alt has recently snapped. (Maybe it really is time for that SU rebuild!) I've looked around, but parts stores say wrecking yard or dealership. Can't I just buy this new somewhere? It's a straight piece, about 8 ins long, slotted at one end, biger donut on the other end that attaches to the block.
Any ideas? Thanks for your help...

Tifosi;

I believe you mean the tensioning bar, and not the bracket (big difference), but in BOTH cases, the ONLY time these things break (or even the alt mounting boss), is when they are not tight and allowed to vibrate...eventually this leads to material fatigue and failure cracking.

Dissassemble, and check for galling and fretting to help determine what's not tight...make right, or it will happen again!

I have had the bolt on the tensioning bar into the front of the head, vibrate loose...I now use thread-lock compound or safety wire.

Cheers

Are you talking about the tensioner arm? How did you snap that?
In almost 40 years of driving Volvos I've had more trouble with what
the arm hooked to (bolts, bolt holes, generator/alternator end plates, etc)
than I have with the arms themselves. Never seen a broken one.

Can you weld it back together? Or maybe just make one from steel flat?
I may spend some time out in the garage on Monday, and I'll keep my eye
open for one.

Hi--You're right--it's the tensioner arm. If you locate one, let me know.

I'll keep my eyes open.
But how did you break it??

No idea--I think the bracket mount underneath got loose, which put movement into the alternator as it spun. Who knows? I'll tighten everything back to trim once I get a replacement tensioner arm.
