My brick sounds like a train. 200 1988

Greetings all,

I've been reading the brickboard for about sixteen months now, and have learned quite a bit about my 240 in the process. I'm not a mechanic by any means, but I have been able to do little things like fix my temp compensator board, clean my flame trap, fix my failed OD relay, etc. with the help of previous posts on the board -- it's an amazing resource. Anyway, this is the first time I'm posting something because I have not been able to track down a post dealing with a similar problem. There's a sound coming from my car that can only be described as a "chicka-chicka" sound.. it really does sound like an old locomotive. It gets faster and faster as I accelerate but it's really noticable when I'm coasting into a parking lot. It sounds like something is rattling around once every wheel revolution. The thing is, it stops as soon as I apply the break. But once I let off of it, it resumes. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas about what it could be, I doubt I have the means to fix it myself but I would like to have a general diagnosis possibility before I take it to the shop. Thanks!

My brick had a similar problem. I removed one of the rear wheels to reveal some rocks stuck in the calipers. To bad I let mine go so long. Good luck.

Thanks for all the responses. The car brakes fine, no pulsating or anything. I've narrowed it down to the passenger side, and I'm fairly certain it's coming from the back. If it's just some rocks, I will be quite relieved. :) Thanks again.

Sounds like it possibly a wheel bearing, possibly a brake pad problem. Since you didn't say which end it is comming from. You can fix either one your self. But for general diagnosis, jack the front of the car up (either both sides at once or one at atime, doesn't matter. Just don't forget the Jack stand). When the wheel is in the air, lock your steering. Spin the wheel. I have a sneaky feeling you will find it.

I have personally not experienced that, but I would certainly be pulling the wheels to see if the calipers and or pads are OK. If you have a loose caliper, not a good thing. If you have pulsating brake peddle then could be combination warped rotor and sticking caliper piston.

This is all conjecture, but if the noise stops when applying brakes, then I would examine them first.
